New Statewide Website for Pro Bono and Legal Aid AttorneysAugust 29, 2005Texas lawyers seeking information about pro bono opportunities may now visit www.texaslawyershelp.org: a dynamic new advocate website launched for Texas attorneys. For attorneys looking for pro bono opportunities, the website offers two useful components. The “New Cases” feature shows on-line postings of cases that need placement. Short descriptions and contact information are available for anyone to review. The “Volunteer Clearinghouse” offers descriptions of nearly all the pro bono programs in Texas. Along with contact information, the descriptions explain what types of cases a program handles, what types of pro bono help are needed, and the resources and support offered to volunteers. Both the New Cases and Volunteer sections are accessible from the home page in a highlighted article or the left navigation bar. Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas and Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program are using the on-line case posting tool. Additional programs will begin participating this fall. The calendar feature on the site is accessible to everyone as well. As the website grows, training opportunities, clinic volunteer opportunities, and other events will be posted. Also coming in the future: resources for pro bono attorneys in the Library section and a searchable guide for pro bono opportunities in Texas. For more information, contact Susan Schoppa, Texas Lawyers Care/SBOT at sschoppa@texasbar.com, 512-463-1463, ext 2155, or Neish Carroll, Texas Legal Services Center, ncarroll@tlsc.org, 512-477-6000. Partnering organizations for the website include: Texas Legal Services Center, Texas Access to Justice Commission, Texas Equal Access to Justice Foundation, Texas Bar Foundation, Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas, Lone Star Legal Aid, and Texas RioGrande Legal Aid. |
