Message From the Section Chair

Diana S. Friedman

Chair, Family Law Section

The Family Law Section is the third largest Section of the Bar and is one of the most active and successful Sections. Our membership has ballooned in the last year to a record high approaching 6000 members. It is an honor to work with the Family Law Council, which consists of six officers and twenty-five directors who have a long tradition of being dedicated and committed to improving Family Law in Texas for not only family law attorneys, but also their clients and families.

This year will be busy for the Section with newly approved Supreme Court Forms and the upcoming legislative year. As a Section member, you will receive periodic updates by email on the issues important to the Section.

Upcoming CLE seminars that you should calendar now include:

  • FAMILY LAW & TECHNOLOGY: FROM NO TECH TO HIGH TECH IN TWO DAYS: December 13-14, 2012 in Austin, TX at the ATT Center, led by Sherri Evans as Course Director.
  • MARRIAGE DISSOLUTION: April 18-19, 2013 in Galveston, TX, led by Craig Hasten as Course Director.
  • ADVANCED FAMILY LAW COURSE: August 4-8, 2013 in San Antonio, TX, led by Kathryn Murphy and Bill Morris as Course Directors.
  • NEW FRONTIERS IN MARITAL PROPERTY LAW: October 3-4, 2013 in Napa Valley, CA, led by Charlie Hodges and Jimmy Vaught as Course Director.

By being a member of the Section, you are entitled to a number of enhancements to your practice. For example, the Section Report, a timely digest of every family law case that is decided by our Courts of Appeals and the Texas Supreme Court, is published four times a year, along with an annual Bibliography and Special Legislative Edition that is published after each session of the Texas Legislature. Every Section member also receives, free of additional charge, the current edition of the Tool Kit which is a quick reference that can be taken to court and depositions and includes such subjects as current child support tables, calendars, objections, predicates, expert witness testimony, contempt and other relevant subjects. You will also receive regular updates on the legislature throughout the session.

We are in the process of revamping our website to make more information accessible to all.

Membership in the section is essential to attorneys who handle the occasional family law matter, as well as those attorneys who practice family law extensively or make family law their sole area of practice. Please join us and enrich your practice!
